"Lophius Americanus", the monkfish species caught in the Northwest Atlantic, is landed both by draggers, gillnetters and as by-catch from scallop boats from Maine to North Carolina. App. 2,500 mt of whole, head-on monkfish is exported every year to Korea, and app 3,000 mt of cut tails are processed for the U.S. and European markets; Seatrade packs app. 1,500 mt tons of fresh and frozen monktails and graded fillets for its European customers. The resource is considered to be reasonably stable, and the 2007-08 TAC (total allowable catch) will remain at 10,000 mt of whole monkfish.
